Reflections on Wider School and Extra-curricular Involvement
Throughout practicum 1A and 1B I have engaged in several wider-school and extra-curricular activities. These have been broken up into three distinct sub-groups, the first is additional meetings and professional learning development. Through these meetings and courses, I was able to engage with the HPE department and the wider-staff cohort. These experiences were invaluable as I was able to share and exchange ideas with some of the best kaiako in the region.
Topics included current school events, notices, behaviour management strategies: such as PB4L, new ākonga engagement tasks, and an NCEA accord day where we discussed the upcoming changes to the NZC including what to expect as a kaiako implementing these changes. The learnings I took away (around school structure and curriculum) will be extremely beneficial as move into the next phase of my teaching journey.
The second sub-group is school activities which includes assemblies. These were a nostalgic experience which took me back to my own days at secondary school. They highlighted the importance of bringing all ākonga together: seniors and juniors. Creating a positive, school atmosphere and culture of whanaungatanga. Especially for the ākonga who have not previously experienced assemblies or wider-school events due to the restrictions of covid-19.
Lastly the house/sporting events. As a HPE kaiako, I had many opportunities to experience these activities. A few of the more successful and enjoyable activities include refereeing the house touch competition, competing in lunch time lawn-bowls, and volleyball competitions. All these activities enabled me to build a stronger connection with my practicum school and gather a larger sense of whanaungatanga: belonging amongst ākonga and kaiako. This connection helped me build genuine relationships inside and outside my classrooms and helped to inform my teaching practices around what the students enjoy and value.
