Kī-o-Rahi Resources

Check out my awesome resources for the traditional Māori tākaro (sport) Kī-o-Rahi!

Kī-o-Rahi is based on the Māori purakau (legend) of Rahi and his wife Ti Ara who was rescued from the patupaiarehe. It is played differently throughout Aotearoa as there are custom variations throughout iwi and tribal areas. However, the importance and tīkanga (custom) remains the same as value is placed on the physical activity aspect of the game.

Tākaro (sport) has the unique ability to reflect Tupuna (ancestorial) story telling in a meaningful way. As it is able represent Te Ao Maori, which acknowledges the interconnectedness and interrelationship of all living and non-living things.

Through playing/learning Ki-o-Rahi we are not only keeping consistent with the partnership principle outlined in Te Tiriti o Waitangi but enabling a bridge to be built between historical storytelling and modern learning environments.

Resources include an infographic for both 'the origins' and 'how to play' Kī-o-Rahi.
